Review: Abode Bistro and Bar

If you’re looking for a casual yet elegant dining experience, Abode Bar Bistro is for you. Conveniently located at the Parkroyal Hotel complex in Darling Harbour, this place has a warm and welcoming vibe perfect for intimate dining, an after work catch up or those family and friends get togethers.

The moment you step inside this high ceiling space, you’ll be captivated by the white accent theme and subtle lighting that creates a stylish ambience. Nicely laid out tables and chairs along with some cozy lounge areas. An open bar that carries a wide variety of beer, wine and spirits. It’s a lovely place to relax and spend the evening.

Menu consists of Lunch Menu, Bar Menu, Dinner Menu, Chef’s Tasting Menu and Children’s Menu. For tonight, we settled on the Chef’s Tasting Menu $95 per person, $35 additional with wine paring.

Two slices of slightly charred house bread with accompanying cultured butter and extra virgin olive oil dip was first to arrive. Bread was fluffy, soft with a smoky flavour. I’m a big fan of olive oil and dipping the bread into it, I can taste the fresh and slight fruity aroma of the oil. Such a great pair!

Second to arrive was a small bite. A piece of golden tempura styled prawn wrapped in nori, it was crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. Served over thinly sliced vegetables with an enhanced Japanese flavour.

Gorgeous plate of cured salmon followed. Every bite was melt in the mouth, with wonderful fresh flavours on the palate. Added elements balanced the complexity of this dish. Champagne, fennel, cucumber and Geraldton wax complemented the fish well.

A medley of colours catches my eyes when the next dish arrived. Fish presentation was absolutely superb, a marriage of steamed flesh and crunchy skin. Served with uni cream, native greens, fish roe, it’s such an exquisite dish. Uni cream with the fish roe added a rich taste, coupled with briny bursts. It was heaven!

Our jaw-dropped when the waitress brought the next dish! The Kurobuta (aka Berkshire) pork jowl was divinely presented with lots of vibrant colours. Every bite was an explosion of flavour, meat was tender and moist. A combination of slight soy sauce taste and kimchi complemented the luxurious marbling of the meat making it much more flavourful. It’s truly an outstanding dish.

The Riverina Grain Fed Strip-loin was a textbook dish. Elegantly plated combining fresh colourful ingredients such as beetroot puree, Dutch carrots and eschallot. The meat was sublime, perfectly cooked, tender and juicy, the red wine jus added excitement to the rich flavours of the meat.

A refreshing scoop of ice cream was served as a palate cleanser. Ending on a sweet note, a dark chocolate mousse, torte, passionfruit, hazelnut praline and smoked salt. Bliss in every bite, it was decadent, creamy, and full of chocolatey flavour.

We were still savouring the dessert’s sweet notes on our tastebuds when the waitress brought two glasses of Chef’s home made limoncello. It brought back memories of dining in Italy. Taste was smooth with a zesty flavour. What a meal that was!
