Our favourite fish and chips shops in Sydney

HAPPY DAYS! With the clock already sprung forward for the Daylight Savings Time and some easing of Covid-19 restrictions, the start of the fun time under the sun has officially begun. The great outdoors plays a big part in the Australian way life. During the long warmer months, we tend to indulge in a lot of outdoorsy activities like cycling in the park, getting out on the water, the beach, bush walking, camping, an evening under the stars cinemas and of course, the quintessential true blue barbie!
The abundance of seafood and great weather makes Down-under the envy of the world. Whether shucking a fresh oyster or digging in to grilled fish, cooked prawns, fish and chips, just about everyone’s seafood preference is available to be enjoyed at home or in one of many great restaurants. I have a big love affair with seafood and I can easily create a seafood dish adopting the flavours of my country or re-create a recipe from one the many cookbooks I have at home. Fish and chips is my go-to for a quick pick me up and seafood hit, it’s a comforting dish and tummy satisfying. Mmmmmm the smell of freshly cooked fish and chips, its golden colour and crunchy bites dashed with brown malt vinegar (I like it this way) and a squish of fresh lemon, wow, it’s definitely a winner for me.
Sydney is home to many fantastic fish and chips shops and numerous quality seafood restaurants of course! From an old school style of serving, wrapped in traditional paper to take away or dine in, there is something for everyone to enjoy. They say it’s best to enjoy a fish and chips by the water where possible, so I’ve listed some of our favourite venues where the food and water views collide in a tasty combination!
The Bridge Seafoods
430 Princes Highway, Blakehurst NSW 221
Trading Hours: 7 Days 09:00 – 18:30
IG: @thebridgeseafood
Located just before Tom Ugly’s Bridge in Blakehurst, this seafood shop has always been an icon as far back as I can remember, it’s been there many years. It’s the perfect stop if you’re southbound for a quick seafood meal or shopping for the freshest seafood available for home or the barbie. Their fish and chips always ticks the right boxes. Golden battered large fish with a generous amount of chips. I also enjoy their freshly cooked prawns and prawn cutlets. Plenty of parking and if you want to devour your meal then and there, a small park area next to the shop and has a number of benches with stunning water views, bins also make disposal easy.

Doyle’s on the Wharf Takeaway
Military Rd, Watson Bay NSW 2030
Trading Hours: 7 Days 10:00 – 17:00

Fish and chips by the water, well Doyles on the Wharf has you covered. The takeaway shop is one of the siblings of the famous Doyles Seafood Restaurants. Located on the ferry wharf at Watsons Bay, not only do you get a delicious bounty of seafood here, you’ll also be treated to stunning views of Sydney Harbour along with the Sydney skyline. There are tables and chairs for dining in, but if you prefer being outdoors then the park opposite the wharf has plenty of benches where you can sit and enjoy your bounty. A nice and varied menu but we always go for their Seafood Basket which consist of beer battered fish, calamari, prawn cutlets, scallops and chips, just all our favourites in one takeaway box, super! They also offer a variety of fresh salads as well . This place is fully licensed if you fancy a glass of wine or beer to go with your meal, what a great idea!

Kiwi Fish and Chips Roseberry
895 Botany Rd, Mascot NSW 2020
Trading Hours: 7 Days 11:00 – 21:00
IG: @kiwifishshop
There are no water views but it’s a gem! Totally worth the drive if you don’t live near the Roseberry – Mascot area. It’s a little shop nestled along a small parade of shops on Botany Road close to the Newmarket Hotel. A good indication is to look for a queue, with patrons normally waiting for their orders outside. The shop has a few tables inside for dining in, but with the varying restrictions, check if that is still an option. What I love here is the batter they use, it’s light with a great texture and the variety of fish on offer. Famous for their Jumbo Kiwi Fish Burger with cheese, egg and sweet potato chips. Yay, go the Kiwis!

Smiths Seafoods
727 Princes Highway Blakehurst 2221
Trading Hours: 7 Days 09:00 – 18:00
IG: @smithsseafoods
Another iconic fish and chips shop located in Blakehurst! I have been here heaps of times. For motorists driving back to Sydney, this is a great opportunity to stop for a good seafood feed before getting home. Great fish and chips combo! Always consistent with the fish cuts and a generous serving of golden crunchy chips. It’s also a seafood shop offering a wide variety of fish, cooked prawns and oysters. Make sure to try their potato scallops, lovely texture and heavenly spudness in every bite. Next to the shop is a little park with benches, a good spot to enjoy your seafood. If you set yourself up on the rocks, a wonderful view of the water awaits, waterfront dining without the price tag!

Battered at the Bay, La Perouse
51 Endeavour Avenue La Perouse
Trading Hours: Mon – Thu 11:00 – 18:30 Fri – Sun 10:30 – 19:00
IG: @batteredathtebay
Located opposite Frenchmans Bay Beach and reserve in La Perouse, this restaurant / takeaway will wow everyone. The restaurant offers ample outdoor and indoor seating areas with sublime views over Botany Bay. The historic La Perouse has so many stunning areas around the headland where you can sit down and enjoy your meal. We just like to sit on one of the benches facing the water and enjoy the food and views. Menu is quite extensive, from grilled seafood, battered platters, snacks and sides, burgers and drinks. On our last visit we opted for one of their specials, 2 flathead, calamari and chips with a side of potato scallops, it didn’t disappoint at all, it was a spot on goodness. Tip, always check out what’s on their specials!

The Fishbox and Co
14 Carwar Ave, Carss Park 2221
Trading Hours: Mon – Closed Tue – Sun 11:00 – 20:00
IG: @thefishboxandco
Such a lovely shop, a very modern and slick design. There are tables inside with a small number outdoors. Easy to navigate menu from the traditional fish and chips, snacks and sides, burgers, share boxes, salads and lunch deals. We tried their Fisherman’s Box with battered NZ Hake, crumbed calamari, grilled prawn skewer, chips and tartare along with fish cakes. I must say, hands-down! everything was so fresh and perfectly cooked especially the succulent grilled prawn skewer. Carrs Park Flats is just a minute away from the shop where you can enjoy your take away meal and couple it with water views, it’s also an expansive park to take a leisurely stroll in after your feast!

Please note that due to Covid-19 restrictions, some venues that have indoor seating are subject to current Covid-19 safety guidelines, so check them out.
